Mind over Matter

As someone who has food issues (in one form or another), for as long as I can remember, I am all too familiar with how powerful the mind can be. When I was young, the rule in my house was ‘you eat what is cooked’. Like a helping of everything. My dad was very old school and it’s how he was raised. I would sit for hours and hours at the table, because just the thought of tasting the gross thing he wanted me to eat (mainly veggies), made me quite nauseated. I’ve heard it before, from doctors, friends, even strangers…just eat it. What most people do not understand is that to eat something that tastes bad also physically hurts. How, exactly, can I eat something if I am gagging and on the verge of vomiting? The fact is, I can’t. And you couldn’t either. Believe me when I tell you, I’ve eaten vegetables in every way imaginable, I just don’t like them!

There comes a point that you have to stop the blame/excuse game and realize that your weight problem is your own. Once you begin to own it, you can begin to push through the addiction. It’s not easy, but there is hope. When you fail, the quicker you realize the failure was your own, the quicker you can dust yourself off and get back on track.

Mind over matter is about realizing, dealing with, and accepting who you are and what your faults are. No one is perfect. I mean…sometimes life is about salads and grilled chicken and then sometimes…sometimes it’s about cookies or ice cream. What matters is where you go after the cookies and ice cream.

It is about getting real and taking excuses out of the equation. It’s about accepting who you are and educating yourself so you can strive for what you want. It’s about recognizing this is so much more than a smaller waistline, it’s about your loved ones. It’s about joining in on the fun instead of watching from the sidelines. It’s about feeling good. It’s about showing your kid how to take care of themselves AND showing them, by example, taking care of yourself is top priority. It’s about every single day, looking at yourself in the mirror and reminding yourself: no excuses. You ARE worth it. You CAN do it. You WILL do it. No matter what. I will not allow food to run my life.
